Beehive Ginger

Whenever I've seen this flower (or inflorescence|* as they are technically referred to)  in cut-flower arrangements, I go nuts. They are brightly colored  and give out  a sweet-spicy-gingery fragrance, they are 5 to 8 inches tall and last for a couple of months as a cut flower. Impressive, huh?

I'm in awe of their color, appearance, aroma and their longevity as cut-flowers. They are native to Malaysia and the tropics.

While the flowers themselves are not attractive the brightly colored bracts* arranged in a honey-comb structure is what's attractive and eye-catching.

During the winter months when the ground is covered in snow and when the cold nipping wind has you wishing to be in tropical paradise, the presence of these beautiful flowers in a  simple vase in your family room  would bring that tropical warmth and brightness that you love and are craving for.

*bracts = modified leaf
*inflorescence = The complete flowerhead of a plant including stems, stalks, bracts, and flowers. A flower that is not a solitary flower
