On most days when I cook lentils for soup in a small pressure cooker I think of the magnificence of the 'Old faithful'. All the pressure building up in the belly of our earth and venting it out for us to admire in awe!
'Old Faithful' is the most popular Geyser in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming,USA. Yellowstone National park itself sits on an active caldera. A volcano with a cauldron- like volcanic feature.
Cauldron = a huge wide hollow pot.
The heat comes from the geothermal activity in the brine (salt water) that is 2 to 5 km below the surface. The geyser is like a pressure cooker venting off heat at regular intervals.
When 'Old Faithful' was named it was named so for the eruptions that occurred 'faithfully' at regular intervals of time. The eruptions occurred every 66 minutes or so; these days they occur every 90 minutes or so.
An eruption releases 12000 to 14000 L of boiling water which shoots up to a height of 106 - 145 ft and lasts for 1.5 to 5 minutes. Wow.
